I am a girl who would love to be able to run. It is a goal of mine. I want to also loose 140 pounds. Does anyone have suggestions for starting a running program that will help with weight loss? I would like to run a 5K this spring.
Hi Lynette,
Looks like we are heading down the same path. I looked into couch to 5k, google c25k.
I also want to run and I need to drop 130 lbs. It has been awhile so right now I have started with walking. The first week of Jan I plan on starting c25k but I will go slow.
I hope this is something you might find helpful.
Lynette - Here's my advice. First, go to your local running store and get fitted for shoes that accommodate your running style. This is very important.
Next, I would start out slow and do some interval training. Walk, jog, walk, jog... Time and distance will all depend on you. As you progress, jog more and lessen the recovery walks. Dont forget to warm up then stretch and strech after your run as well.
Welcome to the wonderful world of running... Beware its VERY addictive
My wife and I started running back in August.....Love it and always look forward to the next race......so far we have ran in 4 5ks and 1 10K......my wife started with the c25k and I just started walking, jogging, and running...........a couple of tips that I have learned.
2.Go at your own pace......jog or run as much as you can BUT if you have to walk then walk...you are only racing yourself!
3. Believe in yourself! You can do it! to me running it all mental.
4. HAVE FUN WITH IT.
Running will help with weight loss.....I have lost about 60lbs and my wife has lost about 25lbs.
Good luck!
I really like the C25k. It's pretty easy at first but as the weeks go by it does get more difficult. It's great to use on the treadmill when the weather is bad but it's really fun to have it on your iphone when you are running outside. Good Luck! You can do it!!!
Start slow... I began running about three years ago. I began with walking, then I would jog for one minute and walk a minute or two, and repeat that for a half hour. Eventually I was jogging for three minutes and walking for one or two. I remember celebrating when I could easily run for 10 minutes straight. I have run three half-marathons since that time... hoping to do a full marathon in 2011.
I have been running for a year, I am 61 years old, I love it.
I have lost over 50 lbs and went for checkup, everything is good, doctor told me to increase my running to 5 days a week. I had cut back some so I could do more mileage, but he wants me to run atleast 30 minutes aday, its hard to do everyday, I like to go couple times a week and go all out, so he stop that.
Congrats on losing 50lbs, that is awesome!!! That is great that you are still running at 61. I like walking everyday in the morning, it gives me more energy throughout the day. If he wants you to run 5 days, you can try going for 3 days and then have a day off and then go for 2 days and take a day off, just an idea. Keep up the Good Work!!!

Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am right there with you in wanting to run. I signed up for a half marathon in January and now I am a little nervous since the race is in August. I am been doing a walk and run workout. Keep at it and you will reach your goal.
Just take it one day at a time and one step at a time on your training journey. Before long it will become much easier and you will be saying to yourself, "I CAN DO THIS!"
Hey um.. im 15 and have 1 month to be able to run for a long time without getting tired or getting asthma. I can't run for my life and i don't know how to do this! I want to do soccer this year and to make it I need to have high endurance and stamina. Which I have none. But im super determined so tell me what to do and ill do it.
I would also suggest the walk.. jog... walk.. jog... method. I think this would help and eventually you will be able to jog longer then walk.. It will keep getting better the more you practice at it!!
I'm a beginning runner as well. I've only just gotten to the point where I can run a mile without stopping. I want to run a 5K in early December. If I keep training 4-5 times a week, do you think that would be unrealistic?
I'm going to start the c25k today! I will let you all know how it goes! Along with my current strength training program, I'm hoping to lose about 30-40 lbs in the next 6 months.
C25k is a great training program. It starts out slow and incorporates interval training to teach your body how to run more efficiently and then faster. Good luck to all of you! Hal Higdon has some great programs also.
