I am a soon to join the health care industry, and I also have diabetes. Where I am going with this is that I am trying to reduce my insulin intake by working out and nature herbs. I am not saying diabetes is reversible, but I want to find ways to avoid being so depended on my insulin. Soon I will be taking Gymnma Sylvestre and a mixture of other things to reduce my current basil rate on my insulin pump. Here is some information on Gymnma Sylvestre, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnema_sylvestre If you'd like to tell me ways type one diabetics can reduce there insulin rates, I'm all ear, or if you would like some advice, I'll do what I can.

Wondering what kind of pump u use? my husband uses pod n loves it!

We have found extreme diet control n exercise reduce the insulin intake, but be prepared for crashes.

I have been using One Touch Ping for about two years now. Its pretty nice for blood sugar corrections, other then that I'm still waiting for a pump that does it all. I've noticed some extreme crashes myself with the intake of cinnamon and chromium. I dropped the chromium due it being a heavy metal, but I was having my blood sugars stay in the 50's with out any insulin intake and it took about 200-250 carbohydrates and an hour to get it to normal. And yes since I've been a member of anytime fitness and have been more active, I have been able to lower my basil rate. Best of wishes to you and your husband.

Justin, I just got some Gymnma Sylvestre at the vitamin shop - when do you take it and how much each day? I am a type 2 dibetic and slowly losing weight - the Dr says if I lose another 25 pounds he will take me off the insulin...a goal

Hi Justin, the book 'The Diabetic Athlete' is 240+ pages describing the impact of exercise upon insulin requirements. The author is a PhD, an athlete, and a T1 diabetic. I'm a T2 myself but still find the book to be invaluable as it has given me insights into diabetic/hypoglycemic exercise physiology I've been unable to find elsewhere. Perhaps your library has it or can borrow it for you. If not you could buy it used as I did or new as it's fairly widely available.

Great info! I just downloaded a sample of The Diabetic Athlete' to my Kindle. I've been T1 for 38 years, will hit 70 in a few months and wonder if this book is geared more to the younger crowd. I'm a big ATF fan and try to get there for an hour four days a week. I had been following "Optimum Exercise Plan for Diabetics," but today went back to 30 min doing intervals on treadmill, followed by abs and lower body workouts on machines. Feel much more energized this afternoon rather than recovering from the lows after the former regimen. Anyway, glad to find this forum!

I was just wondering about diabetes and muscle growth my doctor has mentioned to me that if you don't have enough protien intake and you workout you can burn muscle instead of fat. I guess i am wondering if i can up my protien with a certain food or something else to make sure i get stronger while lifting thanks

To Jobu555:

I am a type 2 diabetic. You can use a whey protein drink almost any time of the day to up your protein. Read the labels and try to find one with as little added sugar as possible. Almost all protein supplements have SOME carbohydrates in them, but often they are naturally occurring. Protein supplements are especially important after weight training. Try to consume protein within 30 minutes after your workout. You may find that you also need some carbohydrates at this time (I find that my blood sugar goes down dramatically after a hard workout with weights, and you don't want to go too low).

I have been T2 for 6 years do not take insulin just metformin 2x day. I joined Anytime about a month ago and them promptly got Broncitis. I have not been to work out in almost 2 weeks. Went last night and it felt wonderful to go. I need to loose some weight but I guess I will take it slow and just start with getting some exercise. At least I am doing something, I guess. Thanks for letting me join in the conversation and chat with people who are dealing with the same stuff.Happy

Nice to see some activity on this message thread. I’m T2 for 25 years. For the past 10 years I’ve been insulin requiring and have had good success using an insulin pump. Over the past 10 years my weight kept creeping up so I decided to do something about it. I lost about 50# before getting stuck which prompted me to join Anytime Fitness. I’m on my way again and have lost another 10 pounds while adding some lean muscle mass. My insulin requirements are down from 140 units a day (when I was at my peak weight) to around 40 a day now. It’s a battle and a lot of hard work but well worth the efforts. I’m also fortunate that my insurance covers Continuous Glucose Monitoring so I’ve been able to get more active without crashing and burning too often. To all with the same battle, keep up the hard work.Happy

Todd that is great!
Dump the crap and embrace the change...
My Dad has been a T1 for 30+ and is suffering from poor management... awful.
I have been a T2 for many years but dropped my Actos and Met 18mo ago.
Adding lean muscle and the nutrition change has been the key...
Here's my story...

Hello my name is Denise. I just joined Anytime fitness a few days ago. I am a type 2 I have been for about 3 years on insulin the whole time I have been doing a lot of reading on reversing Diabetes with weight loss and diet. Now I don't now how true this is but I'm gonna give it a go. If anyone has any advice I'm all ears. Thanks. Grin
