Your abdominal visibility will come down to your diet and shedding enough body fat to uncover them. I'm not there yet, but from what I understand it takes a lot more weight loss and more discipline to get there than you'd expect.

As for exercises, my understanding is that weighted exercises are going to help give you the deeper cut look as opposed to the wavy look (talk about a good problem to have!) I do weighted ab work and treat that group like any other. Ever since I started practicing progressive load with ab work, Ive noticed a lot of improvements in my core and have had some hip and back pain relieved.

My favorites are kneeling pulley crunches, crunches on a decline bench (with weight if you can), reverse crunches on the same decline bench (sitting upwards, holding the handle and pulling your knees up) and then pushing your feet to the ceiling, hanging knee raises and twists with a medicine ball. And be sure to work the negative portions (the second half of the movement) for maximum affect! I've read that your abs are designed to primarily provide resistance support (as opposed to a pushing movement) so working those negatives will really be helpful - if anyone knows what I mean and can explain that better, please do!

That could be the most poorly worded paragraph ever, but I hope it made some sense!

Not everyone has a "6 pack". Some people only get a visible 2 no matter how hard they train or how lean they are. I myself, appear to have 8...it genetic and you usually only see abs with weighted ab training so they "pop" more and very low bodyfat. People in magazines are extreme dieting for competitions when they shoot the photos as it is a difficult look to maintain
