What kind of exercises work best to get rid of them excess love handles?
Diet gets rid of love handles. There have been a lot of questions about this lately on the Q+A part of this site, but the answer remains the same.
No one can spot reduce. Weight comes of all over at the same time, some areas a little faster, some slower than others. The belly is usually the last to go, and it requires strict attention to diet and consistent workouts. Reducing the amount of sodas, processed foods, empty calories and minimizing added sugar will help.

Is it best (when aiming at the belly bulge)to focus on cardio until you start losing inches then working on toning or to do both at the same time?
Both at the same time will keep you burning calories longer. Traditional cardio tends to stop the excess calorie burn with the stoppage of the treadmill/bike/elliptical. Resistance training can keep that fire burning for nearly a day and a half (if you are working your muscles very hard. ) There are several active threads right now about this on the Q+A boards, I am sure they will help you find answers there.

When I started working out my main goal was to minimize my love handles as that was my only huge problem area! Everything else was how I wanted it! I started out at 120 pounds and am now down to 100 pounds and have lost almost 4 inches from my waist! My love handles have gone down a very noticeable amount!
All I have done two times a day for 20 minutes each time, 5-6 days a week is a HIIT routine on the treadmill! Walk at an incline for 2 mintues then run as fast as I can for a minute at a lower incline! I would recommend you do some sort of HIIT routine to minimize your love handles as well! I have heard that adding HIIT into your workout routine blasts fat like no other! Give it a try!
Jennifer i have heard such great things about HIIT, i was just never sure how much to run and then to rest. I tried it yesterday at my workout just like you mentioned and it was amazing!! I've never felt that good after a workout, defly feeling it today. Thanks for the advice girl!

Thats awesome! Good work! I am glad you really liked it! When I started adding a HIIT routine into my workout five nights a week I started seeing results after two weeks and it was even better after just a month! Keep at it and Im sure you'll see a difference!
Jumping rope, and leg lifts also help this area - I find it easy to do this in the morning before hopping in the shower, and before I go to bed. It doesn't take very long to do and combined with HIIT you would see results in no time (as long as you are watching your diet).
HIIT worked very well for me. I went from 270 down to as low as 228. I would sprint for a full minute at 10.5 mph and then walk from 90 sec and then continue this process for 30 mins a day. I did this 5 days a week and dropped the weight in 4 mos.
Rachel have you noticed results by jumping rope?? I work at a desk all day at home and every hour throughout the day I would get up and jump rope for ten mintues! It would give me an extra burst of energy each time! This lasted for about two weeks before my jump rope broke!
I wasnt sure if I should go buy another jump rope. But if it really does help minimize love handles than I might have to!

!! That is awesome. defly nice to have good reviews on doing it. So far hanging in strong. Ive seen some that people go strong for 30 seconds then rest 30 then back at it. I think once i get used to where Im at i will fluctuate to harder times and longer running. Im curious as well Jennifer if you really saw great results with jump roping, that would be something fun to do with my kids! Started a new supplement today actually. Roxylean! I love jumping rope! You can do a HIIT routine with this as well! Its great for working the leg muscles! My calves were so sore after the first day! I am gonna have to get me a new jump rope! I ordered a new workout DVD today! I like to do these in the mornings, it gets me ready for the day! Its another SWAT one! I would recommend these to anyone! Look up some of the videos on them! I ordered the rapid tone and firm one because I dont have much more weight to lose before I look too skinny! :/
