This was a shock and I have to change a whole lifetime of bad habits
Hi Tiffany-
I'm sure you are in shock and the good news is that you can do something about your diagnosis. It's not too late. Pre-diabetes is so very common these days and unfortunately growing more and more so popular everyday with Americans eating habits, obesity, and lack of regular exercise. You can do lots about your condition so be sure to use this website regularly for support. There is a lot of data available to you. Here is a recent article that I found on here for you:
Thank you!!!!! I appreciate it!
Hi Tiffany - like Jennifer said - there is sooo much you can do to prevent your condition from turning into diabetes. Start eating healthier - use the diet tracker on here - it will show you just how much sugar & carbs you are taking in each day. Regular exercise will help and weight loss will help greatly. There are so many tools on this site that can help you out!
This site is also a WONDERFUL place to find encouragement or just new ideas to help you to make changes!
Best of luck!
One of the most common diseases in the US. The good thing is you control it. Its not a cancer that can control you. You actually have a say so in the effect it takes. Take care.
Hi Tiffany, You are not alone!!! I too, struggled with this as I had not been able to exercise for about 10 years until I had both of my hips replaced. Now that I can exercise again(been a member since October 2011 and working with a trainer) and with a sensible diet (working with a nutritionist) I have been able to bring my blood sugar level into normal range (not to mention my cholesterol). As Brett said, you can take control of this (just as I have done) through dedication to yourself and your health.
Jennifer provided a great link to review. I was just reading a very similar article titled "Give Your Heart a Workout" in the February 2012 Prevention magazine. While the article and study focused on heart health it also talks about the effects interval training has on your muscles. The article explains how high-intensity cardio prompts your muscles to develop energy-making units within cells (mitochondria) that use sugar and fat for fuel. The more mitochondria you have, the better your muscles become at utilizing carbohydrates, improving the body's insulin sensitivity thereby, decreasing the amount of sugar floating around in your blood and lowering the risk of Type 2 diabetes. The article also talks about the importance of strength training and stretching and, gives examples of some strengthening and stretching exercises as well as a sample weekly "sweat schedule".
lwells59, good for you. I've brought mine down to normal too. I am still working hard. Mine has been staying between 84 and 104. A lot better than when it was averaging 159.
