I have had RA for half my life, almost 30 yrs. Since joining AF almost 4 months ago I have exercised more in my life than ever before. I'm feeling better and love that I have a choice of the bike or treadmill depending on what hurts and how I feel. I'd love to do the elliptical but am terrible at it right now. Only a few minutes before I crash. Anyone here have this condition and what do you choose for exercise. I'd love to know what has helped you.
I don't have RA myself but my mom does, so have seen what had bothered and/or helped her. I would say do what is comfortable. If pain begins, try something else. I would continue to mix it up with different variations of cardio so that you don't get bored or plateau. Some light machine and/or resistance training would benefit you as well.
I have had RA for 12 years now most of which has been under control w/ meds until recently. I have just joined AF. I am not new to gyms although it's been 4 years since I've been in one. I know I feel better and sleep better when I exercise. I was told at my onset that if I keep my muscles strong it will help my body to compensate during times of inflammation. It also keeps my range of motion. I do love to stretch too which is a huge factor in rom for me.
I work as an equestrian trail guide and tend to gain some weight over the winter months from being less active. Along with taking additional steroid this past year dealing with flares I thought I'd join a gym to help myself. I am excited and looking forward to meeting myself again soon ;o)
I have dealt with RA for my entire life and I find that if i keep going even when I hurt that I tend to be better off. Building muscle will help a lot, lots and lots of stretching, I also tend to do a lot of flexibility exercises. Keep up the good work and I wish you the best. Pain free hugs
Thanks gals! I'm in Florida for the winter and sure miss my AF gym! The pool and hottub are wonderful but I miss my treadmill. Never thought I'd say that.
Happy Exercising everyone!
i was just dx with RA. i was very upset but relieved that i finally knew y i was hurting. my history with pain is a long story that i will spare u. I've gone to the gym and been walking at home for 5 days, the pain has reduced!!! all i would do is stay in bed with pain. now the more i move the better!!! i also have bi-polar and it has helped with my depression and mood swings.
Well, with the holidays and my grandmother and my pup passing away I missed most of December then by January it was cold and I just didn't want to go, so I didn't. Now here it is February and I am getting back into my exercise routine and I feel so much better mentally and physically. I am looking forward to the nicer weather and being able to get outside more soon. Hope your each reaching for your goals
