is there a healthier recipe for sour cream and hidden valley ranch seasoning?

I have given up the chips but I can't give up the dips. I really like sour cream and hidden valley ranch seasoning for my veggies. But, it has so many calories. Is there a healthier recipe for this?

Ah yes, dips! They get me too. And you know, I'm not going to tell you that they're the healthiest thing ever (they're really not the best for us), but I'm certainly not going to tell you that you should eliminate them from your diet (there's room for everything)! So here's what you can do to put a healthy tweak on things:

The seasoning itself contains hardly any calories (the packet says zero, but that's for one serving. I imagine if you compound the data, it would be closer to 10-20 calories for the entire packet).

So what we're looking at here is a replacement for the sour cream or mayo... Have you tried Greek yogurt? An ounce of plain Greek yogurt has less than half the calories of sour cream AND over double the protein content. And to be honest with you, it tastes pretty much just like sour cream.

You could also try light or fat free sour cream, or why not try something like avocado? That might be a fun experiment. The only thing with avocado that you need to remember is that they're very calorie dense (they contain quite a bit of fat - mostly good fats though), so make sure to practice moderation.

You could also go the hummus route...why not make a hummus with the ranch seasoning? Chick peas have a lot of useful nutrients (iron, fiber, and protein are notable here) and they're just plain yummy Lovestruck

Okay, now I'm hungry. I hope you find some of these suggestions helpful!

The Hidden Valley Seasoning Mixes don't have any calories or fat in them. Try sprinkling some of it on your veggies when you cook them. (I do this.) Some people like plain yogurt as a replacement for sour cream.

Another trick is to put a small container of low fat or fat free cottage cheese in a blender with the mix & blend till smooth. still not a perfect combination - but better than full fat sour cream & mayo. Pretty tasty too!

I am with Debbie-

Greek Yogurt....no fat but does not taste like the nasty zero fat sour cream out there.
Plus it has some nutritional benefits as well. If you don't tell people, they won't notice the exchange.

Also, depending on the brand you buy, non-fat greek yogurt tends not to have the biohazard ingredients of the "fat free" sour cream...

I agree with the greek yogurt answer. I think it tastes the same if not better than sour cream. I use oikos or chobani greek yogurt. There's no fat, low calories, full of protein and chocked full of flavor.Happy

Watch the sodium in the HV ranch dip mix. Use onion powder and dried herbs and you'll save on sodium. Or even better, use a mix of fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary and chives are great mixed in yogurt or cream cheese). Fresh dill, onion and greek yogurt make a great dip for raw veggies.
