Protein: The nutrient that much of America is guilty of over-consuming. I have written several articles on this in efforts to alert people of the dangers on the over-consumption of protein. Of of the repeated facts I emphasize in my papers is: "Americans consume approximately 100 grams of protein per day and yet, according to the United States Department Agriculture (USDA), their bodies require between 0.8 and 1 gram of protein per kilogram of weight a day, approximately 17.5 grams per 50 pounds (USDA). In considering that the average American male weighs 191 pounds, it can be determined that, by using the USDA figures, a male at this weight is consuming a little over 42% more protein than required (Ogden, et al. 3)."

We really need to monitor our intake carefully- excessive protein harms, not helps, our bodies. That excessive intake can lead to diabetes, kidney failure, osteoporosis, and so much more!!

I'm on a bodybuilder diet and training schedule,..

My trainer has me on 1g of protein per LB of bodyweight. So right now I'm at 180 g a day.

Depends on you. Body builders tend to be 1.2-1.5g per lb of body weight (that's a lot), but for guys who aren't that insane but are looking to build muscle .8-1.0g per lb is probably a good range to try.

Similar to Seth's answer I try to hit at least 1 gram per lb of bodyweight so for myself that's almost 230 grams.
