treadmill: better workout with slower speed and incline or faster and no incline?
2

Trying to lose weight and want to make best of my treadmill workout. Was using random setting on treadmill and set at 3.9 mph for 60 minutes. The other day for fun I went on manual setting and alternated every minute from 3.5 to 5 mph. It looks like I burn more calories with this workout. What do you think? Any suggestions or ideas?

I have had the same experience. I think it is because with the manual you are on a steady incline... with random your incline changes. If you are going to use random you will have to do a higher speed. If you are looking to burn more calories with less strain stick with the manual incline and alternate your speed your self. I have learned I can burn u 600 + calories within 30 mins using this method. What I do is 15 min increments meaning 15 mins on the treadmill, then 5 mins of stretching then another 15 min session on the treadmill.

Treadmills are different by location. Mine can be set for a specific heart rate. To maintain that, it will sometimes have you going at a steep incline at 7-10 at 3.5-4.0, then will go back to incline 2 at whatever speed it thinks you should be at. So, you don't get used to any speed or incline. Most of the time I just set it at 6 incline at 4.0. That way I know I'll burn about 475 calories and go 4 miles in 60 minutes. If I run for one minute at incline 0 at 6.5 three times, I'll burn about 550 calories. In every case, I want to make sure I'm burning more calories than the distance. So at mile 1.00 I should be at no less than 100 calories and ideally 125.

Why not do both? I use intervals on incline on our machines, and I alter my speed as well. It really toasts the calories.

I find that having incline set at 6.5% and speed of 3.0 mph I burn just as many calories.

my experience is no incline for 30 minutes =100 calories burn @ 30 then I turn it down to 2.5...for me that is good. I am very obese so I get my heart rate up to 141 then I decrease back to 2.5 then up again when my heart rate lowers.

best thing to do is switch it up so your body doesn't get used to one thing. I've had great success running outside without incline for about 10 minutes then about 20 minutes of running up and down hills.

I personally like to walk at 3.0 at no incline for 5 min. then I like to up the incline to 8% for 5 min. then up to 12% for 5 min. and then alternate the process until it is 30 min.
