I am looking for a beginner workout for a teenager, 14, who wants to lose weight and tone up, she is about 5'3" and weighs approximately 150lbs. I am her aunt and would like to do this with her as I am "out of shape" as well and have gained over 50 lbss. since I had my thyroid removed. We both have memberships at AF and would like to commit to doing this together. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have a some suggestions for you. I think the best thing to do if you are a beginner is to familiarize yourself with different lifts. There is an extensive list of videos to watch and the site and is a great resource. Once you have that done, you should probably meet with a person trainer at least a few times to have them put together a workout for you. Here are a couple tips to get things started.
-Even though cardio is great for weight loss, weight lifting is also very effective when done correctly. To see optimal results, there should be a balance.
-Since your goal is weight loss, start with higher reps, probably 3 sets of 15 or something around there and move from exercise to exercise quickly with little rest in between to keep your heart rate up.
-Set some goals and be accountable to one another. Since you are working out together, make your goals together and push each other.
-Make sure to eat right and get plenty of sleep since this will be quite a shock to your body. Use the tools provided on the website and keep your caloric intake low. After all, the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in.
Good Luck!
Get her into a Zumba class!! She will love it, and you may too
I am 51, and I have been doing Zumba for nearly 4 years-it's what got me fit! It's a great cardio, core, and leg workout, and so crazy fun. She may enjoy it more at first if you have her bring a friend or two her age.
Crosstraining is essential for everyone, so I'd recommend a basic, full body weight training routine (some are available on this site.)
Best of luck to you both!!
You have done such an amazing job on this series. I envy your sewing skills and your patience and your diligence. If anyone ever asks me how to sew, I'm sending them to your blog and this series. Congratulations on such an extensive, well thought out and clearly presented set of tutorials
