what can i expect in my first meeting with a trainer?

Ok tomorrow I will be meeting with a trainer for the first time. What can I expect and how do I make sure I make the most of this meeting and get a good program to move forward with?

You can probably expect the trainer to assess your weight, and your fitness levels based on age and gender. Then, they'll probably determine your ideal fitness levels for someone of your age and gender, and then recommend a few exercises, and (hopefully) a nutrition guide to help you get to your minimum ideal fitness level.

Typically, your trainer will take you through a Q/A session to learn more about you, your goals, likes/dislikes, things you've tried in the past, experience in the gym, medical history, etc.
After that, most trainers will take you through a basic workout. This basic workout helps them to truly assess where you are on a couple of fronts. First, they will want to see your form/tech on a few exercises. Second, they will look for your response to various exercises and intensities. Generally, most people don't have a good feel or sense of what is 'tough' vs 'easy.' It is important that the trainer understands your thresholds of exertion and comfort zones.

What can you do to make the most of the session?
Don't eat a large meal just before the workout but make sure you haven't fasted either. Have a little something in your stomach.

Hydrate - drink a little more water the night before and an hour or so before the session.

Listen to your body - if something hurts ask to stop the movement or ask for clarification/feedback.

Listen to your trainer - if they want you to slow down or take a break - do it! Everything they do is for a reason. Many people start way too hard and way too fast on their new programs. Change does NOT happen overnight. You greatly increase the risk of injury by going 'getting after it' too much.

Also remember to be open and honest. The trainer is there to help you reach your goals, so make sure to let them know what you really want to get out of your sessions. Good Luck!!!

I met with my trainer last night. We did about 6 minutes on the bike and talked about goals, etc as mentioned above. He wanted to know; an exertion scale of 1 to 10; wanted to know when I felt like I was at 5. Then we did some lunges, a little upper arm resistance by me pushing against his palms in various ways (standing bench press, tricep curls, etc). Then did some upper and lower stretching (only on 1 side) for the trainer to get a feel of my flexiblity. After that I had a consultation with another trainer who then outlined a plan based on the evaluation, taking into consideration my weight loss goals, strength and toning goals. Then offered different personal trainer plans (# of sessions basically). I was hesitant at first, but decided to take on a personal trainer. Hope it works!
