how to tone abs and thighs?

I am looking to tone my abs and thighs, but all the workouts I have used has just built muscle below the fat which makes everything look bigger. What is the best way to tone these areas without "bulking" it up?

We have a good amount of clients who often make similar comments about having a goal of not “bulking up” & although women tend to add size a bit different than men, adding mass & size takes deliberate & intentional effort with how & what you lift along with how & what you eat.

Implementing functional exercises with light weight or even your body weight would be ideal with high repetitions in, my personal favorite, circuit-form if your goal is to add lean muscle mass.

With that being said, your results may recognize or appear “bulkier” until you get to an optimum or ideal weight & body fat%. Getting to your body weight (assuming you already are) & achieving a certain bf% is directly managed through your diet; what types of foods you consume & the quantity of foods you consume. As Sarah mentioned, the diet tracker will be a critical resource for you.

Diet is going to play in a big role in the way that they look. Focus on your diet and add a normal amount of cardio and weight training to your routine. Try not to do ab/core exercises everday. Try training them 3 to 4 days a week, like you would all your other muscle groups. Good Luck!!!

If you are worried about building muscle under your fat and having that look bulky, you may want to consider burning that fat off. You can't really just spot reduce a specific area. The number one factor with reducing your body fat composition is your diet. Try using the diet tracker and activity tracker on this site. Exercise will enhance your diet efforts, you can do a whole body strength training 2-3 times a week (lunges, squats, ab scissors, etc- check out the exercise videos- will help) and cardio 3 times a week to support your goals. As your body fat % goes down you will see improvements in the areas you have specified and all over.

Good luck!
