gym pet peeves??
52

At AF the other day and it was fairly busy. A guy is on the bench (and had been for close to 30 minutes). He finishes a set...and pulls out his cell phone! He sat on the bench (the only flat bench at our gym) and continued to talk on it for several minutes! I noticed 4 different people on their cell phones that day in the gym! It is one of my biggest pet peeves! I am sorry...but few of us are THAT important that we can't turn our phones off for an hour and workout!

Any other gym pet peeves?!? :o)

  1. People and their cellphones -- hate it. I left Planet Fitness because of having to wait patiently for machines while people sat and texted. My first day at AF there was a girl talking loudly on her speakerphone, on the treadmill. I know it shouldn't affect me personally but seeing people socializing at the gym takes me out of the zone. What is so darn important? What did you do before cellphones?

  2. Poor form -- MINE. I'm brand new and I've been given a 5-page workout to do over three days, but I have no idea how to do them correctly and some I don't know at all. One morning I deliberately worked out close to one of the owners so they could see if my form was okay and correct me (I dared not ask since he himself was training with a buddy), and I even said out loud, "I have no idea how to do this!", but I got nothing. So now my husband and I read and watch videos on how to do the exercises at night and in the morning, he "trains" me at the gym.

  3. PDA: Yeah I work out with my SO too, but he's not caressing my butt while pretending to "spot" me. You're not being discreet, we can all see you. Save your kisses and touches for your private post-workout shower.

What I like!

  1. I happen to like the sound of slamming weights and grunting, it's in the category of publicly mixing your pre- or post-workout drink. It makes me feel like I'm in a Gold's Gym working out with superstar bodybuilders. It motivates me because I have a lot of weight to lose before I'm even considered plain ol' "overweight.

    1. Motivating employees. There is a trainer/manager at my club who always has encouraging things to say and even leaves little motivational things on my Facebook page. Not general things either but he'll write that he saw me working out and that I'm a rockstar. Of course I'm going to return every day for that!

I was singled out yesterday for being too loud. I admit that I was probably grunting too loud, because I am recovering from a surgery and am having a difficult time getting my strength back. But yesterday I was doing really well, until this happened. A few moments earlier, someone was yelling the military yell, "Oooh YAAA", or however they say it, and I could hear it clear across the gym. But I was singled out. I was polite and told the workers that I would be more aware of my loudness, but that I wasn't the only one. Yet I was the only one singled out. After I left the office, I did a headcount: there were nine people working out. Nine--at peak hours. I threw all the free passes they gave me to give to coworkers away. I don't like being singled out. I worked out today but made it as quick and quiet as possible. I can't help but wonder if it's because I am a minority. Sorry, but I just can't help but wonder.

Captain Upper Bodies who attempt to become the bodybuilder by 'sculpting' specific areas
Heavy Sweaters and not the kind you wear on a cold day
Cell phones don't bother because I have my own music going on headphone
The people who camp out on an apparatus, when it is obvious that someone else is waiting. The worst offenders are the ones who do their 'circuit' training when the place is obviously busy. Don't do your superset workout routine with 3 different pieces of equipment when it is busy!

I am a member of the gonzales gym and I tried to use a piece of equipment this morning and a woman claimed to be on it even though she was on a different machine. Apparently she was "on" three different machines and kicking people off that tried to work in. She got quite rude when I worked it on a piece of equipment that she claimed to be using after she finished a set on a machine she hadn't even started yet, then a set on yet a different machine, then back to the machine I needed to use.

i haven't ran into any irritating issues at the AF gym I go to but in other gyms I have used people sitting around on equipment jaw jacking and not working out gets on my nerves.

Or those that will hog cardio machines when it is crowded and other people are waiting, I've seen some stop and reset the machine so it looks like they just got on so they can stay on longer.

Not putting equipment back in the right place is another pet peeve.

Hearing other people's music, they have their headphones on and music so loud I can hear the words. I don't want to hear other people's music when I'm working out, especially if it's a genre I don't like.

Just my two cents in.

This was a nice blog post. (I wouldn't have seen it if one of the owners hadn't posted it on Facebook)

http://www.anytimehealth.com/blog/395083--4-ways-to-cope-with-the-january-gym-rush

I partciularly liked this:

Even if you're frustrated with feeling like your "home" is getting invaded, you truly don't know the story behind all the new people making the decision to join a gym. For them, the new year marks a fresh start to battle something bigger than just going to the gym or not. Lethargy, shame, injuries, fear, intimidation, food issues, or depression are just SOME of the things these "newbies" are battling. So while you might feel annoyed, these people are trying to conquer something MUCH bigger than a crowded gym space.

For some reason this hit home, perhaps we can all be a little more patient this time of year.

Cheers

The thing I hate most is when people leave the area and don't break down the equipment they were using, or even clean up after themselves. I have actually seen where the treadmills or elliptical machines had a rag and cleaner on them and the people run or bike hard and sweat up a storm then get up and leave the area. With stuff like that there is no excuse for not taking a few seconds and wipe it off for the next person.

I get the idea that people get in their zone and forget where and what they are doing but if the rag and cleaner is provided why not be nice and clean your mess up before moving on.

I have just a couple:

Not wiping down machines, that is just rude and gross

Talking on the phone while 'resting' on the machine. I fully support resting, but when it turns into a 10+ minute conversation... time to give up the machine and return when you're finished talking

Slamming weights, other people want to use them too, let's all try to take care of the equipment, I also understand working to failure, but have a spotter handy

Lound grunting, moaning, groaning, etc. no one cares how much you are lifting, quit wasting energy on 'sounding tough' and use it to improve your sets

These are small things mostly, still love my gym and the trainers/staff =)

  1. wipe off the equipment when your done. i went to use a treadmill the other day it was covered in sweat. the only good thing about that was i was already needing to blow off some steam so it helped to feed the fire.

  2. i was using the free weights a few weeks ago. doing some shoulder raises. while bringing up the weight this guy walks in front of me to grab a dumbell. i had to stop my rep half way thru to keep from hitting the guy with the weight. then he decides to stand right next to me and starts doing lateral rises. there was plenty of room for him to move down. i was pretty much already against the wall.

  3. the person who gives dirty looks to you cause all the treadmills are currently in use.

the temple terrace location is a great place to workout. the staff is very helpful and friendly.
