The windows of the Cutlass Supreme parked up on a secluded spot on Lover’s Lane were quickly getting steamed up.
“Oh my God! Oh… oh… right there… oh, that is so good!” moaned Jack.
“Man,” said Anita, his date. “You really love French fries.”
“Oh, I do,” replied Jack, taking another big handful and stuffing them into his mouth.
Shaking her head, Anita clicked on the radio.
“This is an emergency announcement,” blared the radio announcer. “Earlier tonight, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that about one in three U.S. adults—an estimated 68 million—have high blood pressure.”
“Did you hear that?” asked Anita, but Jack was focused intensely on his fourth slice of pizza.
“High blood pressure dramatically increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, which are the leading causes of death in the United States.”
“Y’know,” said Anita in a low tone. “High blood pressure is called ‘The Silent Killer’!”
“The Silent Killer?” repeated Jack, his eyes getting wide as his pizza slice dropped back into the box.
“That’s right,” nodded Anita. “Because it often has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people don’t even realize they have it. That’s why it’s important to get your blood pressure checked regularly. Ummm… when’s the last time you got your blood pressure checked, Jack?”
“Take me home,” she said urgently. “I want to call and get you and appointment right away.”
In a huff, Jack slammed the car into gear and spun its wheels as he pulled out.
When they pulled up back at Anita’s house, Jack got out of the car and walked around to open the door for his date.
For a long time, he just stood there, staring at the door. At first, Anita couldn’t figure out what was wrong; then she realized that her door was still locked. She smiled and unlocked it. Still, Jack stood there.
Anita was puzzled and rolled down her window. Then she saw that Jack was staring down at the door handle. Slowly, she looked down herself and began to scream uncontrollably.
There, hanging from the door handle, was a blood pressure gauge.
