Imagine this scene… a vast battlefield, packed from end to end with eager soldiers. On the horizon is a dark wall of opposition. The enemy is upon you. They swiftly charge forward, only to be met with your overwhelming force. Your army quickly takes over the challenge, halting any chances of intrusion on your kingdom. Fall to defeat? Not on your watch!
While this may sound like a pretty awesome scene from a movie, this battle is going on much closer to you than you may think – it’s happening within you at this very moment (cue scary music).
Body at war
Each day your body is at war with nature. Your body is teeming with bacteria. And while many of us make an effort to avoid it (with antibacterial soaps, gels, sprays, etc.), bacteria isn’t always bad! As a matter of fact, the California Dairy Research Foundation found that there may be even more than 1,000 different species of bacteria within you at any given moment.
Probiotics (i.e. ‘good bacteria’) work hard every day to keep your digestive system happy. They keep harmful bacteria at bay, and help “maintain the natural balance of organisms in the intestines.” Probiotics have also been known to help prevent:
- Upset stomach
- Other digestive problems

Where can you get your hands on these little guys? Since they’re already naturally found in your system, you may not need to concern yourself with taking extra probiotics. For those of you who are a little more sensitive to tummy troubles, you may want to give probiotics a try! Fermented foods, such as yogurt, sour cream, and cheese, produce probiotics.
Supplements are available for the lactose intolerant, however, you should consult a registered dietitian when choosing a probiotic supplement. You want to choose a broad spectrum supplement that interacts with both the small and large intestine. If you don’t research your supplement ahead of time, you might be wasting your money.
