This 2011 2i award winner did not want to live the rest of her life being told she couldn’t do activities she wanted because of her weight. So, she changed…
How long have you been a member of Anytime Fitness?
Since May 2010
What was your reason for joining?
I had over 160 lbs to lose and had finally decided once and for all I was going to do it, no matter what. Anytime Fitness appealed to me because of the 24/7-member access, which meant no excuses for not working out. After checking out the website and being inspired by Susan Bock’s success story, I was sure this was the gym for me.
What was your breaking point?
It was really a culmination of events and circumstances that just all came together in my mind. Getting ready to turn 30 was a big part of it... it finally sunk in that I did not want to live the rest of my life the way I had been living. I realized that my weight had kept me from doing so many things in life (much as I tried to not let it), which was silly, since it was something I could change.
What was your first workout like?
Not too bad. For someone 160 lbs overweight, I actually did like to work out and didn’t find it too difficult physically. I just needed the motivation to be consistent. I’ve always preferred the elliptical machine, so that became my cardio of choice. I started out on the lowest incline and resistance and just challenged myself to keep at it for 30 minutes, and then slowly, as I felt I could do more, I’d increase the settings.
What is a typical workout look like now?
Usually a half hour of cardio and a half hour of strength building. I still favor the elliptical for cardio, although I am trying to work in the treadmill there too as I’d like to start running at some point. I’ve also changed up my strength building exercises... I love body weight exercises. I think after being so overweight and not having the ability to really “carry” my own weight (so to speak) the idea of lifting my own body weight with my own strength is cool to me.
What are some of your favorite healthy snacks?
Fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt, pretzels, peanut butter
How about your diet, how did you adjust it?
Drastic, but realistic. Comfort food, most especially sweets, have always been my downfall. I cut out a lot of refined sugar from my diet. I started tracking calories on AnytimeHealth.com, which was a huge help. It’s difficult to know what and how to change your eating if you don’t know what you’re currently taking in. I’ve never been opposed to fruits and veggies; I just typically didn’t choose them before. I decided to make them my best friends
I also started measuring portion sizes... which was a huge help as well. The whole calorie-tracking, portion-measuring practice really helped re-train my brain in how I thought/think about food. I say “drastic, but realistic” because I also tried to keep a mindset of eating the best I could in whatever situation I was in. Meaning if I was at someone’s house or out to eat, I’d eat what I knew was the healthiest option in front of me. My outlook is that you do need to have control over what goes in your body, but you also need to not let it stress you to the point of freaking out if you eat something “forbidden”.
If you were to categorize yourself, would you consider yourself a “gym rat” or a “get in, get out” gym-goer?
Gym rat. I do love my workouts, especially when I can get it done in the morning. It’s a great start to my day.
Number one reason you take care of yourself?
So I can continue to be around for the ones I love!
Just For Fun
What sound do you love?
I’m a music lover. So, music of all kinds... especially my dad playing guitar.
What is your favorite city?
My hometown, Hamilton, Ohio. I grew up here and have grown to love it more than I ever thought I would.
If you had a time machine, where would you go?
Probably back to before I became so overweight. I’d kick my own butt into gear then and wouldn’t have wasted so many years.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Looks-wise, I’ve been told I resemble both Ann Wilson and Pauley Perrette. I’d be flattered to be played either of those beautiful women.
Probably out causing trouble with Mr. Running Man.
